Growing up we moved around a bit and in the shuffle lost furniture, household decoration, toys etc. Each house was decorated differently depending on what was packed away and or missing. A few things stayed constant and those are what made things feel like home. When my parents built a house I was married and living on my own. These treasured things came back and once more were fixtures of home. One of these things was a large wood armoire with various antiques on it like a hat stretcher, a basket of old bobbins and thread, and a little set of drawers with a yellow and violet flowered doily peeking out of one. Being one of my earliest memories with doilies, when people talk of doilies I often think of this one.
Recently, I found a doily very similar to that homey treasure and decided to use it as my inspiration for a ceramic dish. I added a wheel thrown base to the bottom to elevate the form and was happy with the results. For the glazing, I wanted to replicate the colors of the original doily and here are the results.
